All.Films.Look.Alike Competition - Round II
AFLA Competition Rules
- OBJECTIVE OF AFLA: All.Films.Look.Alike (AFLA) amateur and student filmmakers competition was originated by the Amman Filmmakers Cooperative to give these filmmakers a chance to participate in a friendly, collective filmmaking experience without the pressures of grades, or having to write a script, and outside the very competitive film festival rules and guidelines. Above all, it's just fun. AFLA also gives mentors and coaches the chance to assess their students' progress objectively and to shorten the learning cycle. Even professional filmmakers can join the fun.
- HOW TO JOIN AFLA: Shoot a film based on the attached script. Keep film length under 10 minutes. Upload it to YouTube and send us the link. Don't add additional characters or scenes to this basic script. Otherwise, feel free to interpret script within reason. The script was stripped of formatting to ensure simplicity.
- WHO CAN JOIN AFLA: Anyone can participate.
- PRIZES FOR AFLA WINNERS: Three cash awards will be given for 100 USD each. One for best film in the Palestinian refugee camps, the second for best film in Ghour Mazra village region (sponsored by Zikra), and the third for best film outside those areas.
- AFLA SUBMISSION DEADLINE: By February 28th, 2010 all participating films must be uploaded to YouTube and a link emailed to ArabFilmmakers@gmail.com with email subject "AFLA II"
- AFLA SCREENING: All winning AFLA films will be screened at the Jordan Short Film Festival 2010 in a special program. The filmmaker who shows the greatest progress and demonstrates originality will win a special prize (to be announced)

STORY
SAND GAMES
1. EXTERNAL SCENE - VILLAGE ROAD
Yousef walks and kicks around an empty. His school backpack hangs over his white shirt.
The footsteps of a boy follow him. We don't see the boy. Yousef stops for a moment then turns around. The feet stop. It's Mousa, a boy slightly bigger than Yousef. In one hand, Mousa carries his backpack, in another, a stick. Both Yousef and Mousa exchange looks then Yousef turns around and walks faster. Mousa follows him and picks up pace. The distance between them gets narrower. Yousef runs fast until he reaches a house and knocks on the door again and again but no one opens. Yousef turns around and sees Mousa just behind him staring at him. The screen goes black. We hear fighting and screaming.
2. INTERNAL SCENE - YOUSEF'S HOME
Yousef enters the house. His face is muddied and white shirt soiled and looks miserable. Abdullah, his older brother, is upset by what he sees and grabs a stick, bigger than Mousa's and rushes outside the door.
3. EXTERNAL SCENE - VILLAGE ROAD
Abdualh has a frightened Mousa by the throat in one hand and the thick tall stick in the other. On the ground next to Mousa, there is the smaller stick Mousa had with him. Just as Abduallh lifts the stick, a hand grabs his. It's Yousef. He keeps grabbing his brother's hand while pulling the stick out slowly. Abdullah looks puzzled but does not stop Yousef who throws the stick far away and takes his brother's arm and walks away with him leaving Mousa alone with his stick on the ground next to him.
4. EXTERNAL SCENE - VILLAGE ROAD
Yousef squats on the ground and plays with his marbles. He then sees feet in front of him. He looks up and sees Mousa standing there. They exchange looks for a moment then Mousa extend his hand for Yousef to shake. Yousef hesitates so Mousa withdraws his hand and walks away. From a distance, Mousa hears a whistle. He looks back. It’s Yousef waving at him and shouting "want to play with me?"
5. EXTERNAL SCENE - VILLAGE ROAD
Abduallh walks by and sees Yousef and Mousa having fun playing marbles. He stops to absorbs the scene.
